I Only Believe in Myself

I was born catholic. My parents were not “devout” just catholic because their parents were. They are since “agnostic”.
I remember going to catechism. One of my lessons at the age of 14 or 15 was to understand that if confronted with “renouncing my faith” or choosing DEATH, I should choose DEATH. And that Jesus would accept me into Heaven. Well, Well. That was the last day of “catechism” for me.

I left for college at the age of 19. One day, while having lunch in the cafeteria I noticed another student at the table across from me with a bible on the table. I walk up and say; “are you catholic?” (Should have kept my mouth shut). Long story short I find myself in a Pentecostal church.
Having been; “given the gift of the holy ghost” I remember sitting in the front row listening to that day’s sermon. The preacher went on; “There are some in the church that are challenging how I spend god’s money”. He had the audacity to point to me. I had, a few days earlier said to “my friend” that the pastor had purchased a new motor home. I asked him why the pastor was asking 20% of our net income and was driving a NEW motor home. I also wondered why the church did not want us to watch TV, go to sporting events, and listen to contemporary music amongst other rules.
That was enough for me. I left the church. They called me repeatedly and, told me that if I did not come back that I was a “Backslider” and that I would BURN IN HELL.
It took me several months to return to normal and, not have nightmares about burning in hell.
I went from Catholicism to Pentecostal. To Atheism.
Yes, I have let intelligence deem my future.

P.S. Two months ago, my cousin put a 12 gauge to his head. He leaves behind a wife and three kids. The last conversation he had was with his brother. He told him he was molested by a priest from the age eight to twelve. He could not live with the pain any longer.
