Pit Bulls
I too have owned a pit bull, he was very loyal, loving and playful. However, I was fully aware that he was a terrier, bred like all terriers to have the potential to be very fast and to attack something with lightning speed he did not like. He was obedience trained and never treated harshly. However, I was treated like a pariah for having one, dirty looks were the order of the day on walks. People would say they were "babykillers" and I must be insane to have one.
Being a woman, I felt totally safe with him and I am sure if some women that have been attacked and killed by men had owned one, instead of a cocker spaniel or beagle, they would never have been attacked in the first place!!!
Despite this, I always considered other people and their fears of my dog, and I knew I had a commitment on my part to the rest of the human race, to always be aware of my dogs behavior. I don't think I could have lived with myself, if my dog had hurt anyone, let alone killed them.
Collies, Labs and Cocker spaniels are very high on the bite list, along with the ankle biter small dogs. There are just more deaths when the pit bull attacks either a human or another dog, because of the sheer stength of the breed.
In Germany and Great Britain, they have been banned, along with cities in the U.S. like Miami and Denver. Ontario, Canada are also banning them. IBF
